The Urpay district is located in the Pataz Province in the La Libertad region in western Peru . The district was established on February 12, 1959. It has an area of ​​99.61 km². The 2017 census counted 2048 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3336, in 2007 it was 3019. The administrative seat of the district is the 2688  m high town of Urpay with 514 inhabitants (as of 2017). Urpay is 13 km southwest of the provincial capital Tayabamba .

Geographical location

The Urpay district is located on the western flank of the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the southwest of the Pataz province. Along the southern district boundary, the Río Challas and its tributary Río Huancas flows in a westerly direction. The Río Arancante flows south along the western district boundary. At almost the same point, the rivers flow into the Río Marañón , which runs west of the district.

The Urpay district borders in the northwest on the district Taurija , in the northeast and east by the district Tayabamba , in the southeast of the district Huancaspata and on the southwest by the district Santiago de Challas .
