The Santiago de Challas district is located in the Pataz province in the La Libertad region in western Peru . The district was established on June 18, 1987. It has an area of ​​130 km². The 2017 census counted 2351 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3236, in 2007 it was 2797. The district administration is located in the approximately 3300  m high village of Challas with 816 inhabitants (as of 2017). Santiago de Challas is located 18 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Tayabamba .

Geographical location

The district of Santiago de Challas is located in the southwest of the Pataz province on the east bank of the Río Marañón, which flows north-northwest . The Río Challas delimits the district in the northwest.

The Santiago de Challas district is bordered to the west by the districts Alfonso Ugarte and quiches ( province Sihuas ), to the north by the districts Urpay and Tayabamba and to the east and the south by the district Huancaspata .
