The Alfonso Ugarte district is located in the Sihuas Province in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was established on March 27, 1953. The district was named after Alfonso Ugarte (1847-1880), a Peruvian military who took part in the saltpeter war against Bolivia and Chile.

The district has an area of ​​89.1 km². The 2017 census counted 567 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1097, in 2007 it was 874. The district administration is located in the 3205  m high town of Ullulluco with 215 inhabitants (as of 2017). Ullulluco is located 25 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Sihuas .

Geographical location

The Alfonso Ugarte District is located in the far east of the Sihuas Province. The Río Rupac and the Río Marañón flow north along the southeast and eastern district boundaries .

Alfonso Ugarte district is bordered to the west by the district Huayllabamba , in the northwest on the district quiches , to the east by de district Santiago Challas ( province of Pataz ), in the extreme southeast of the district Huancaspata (also in the province of Pataz) and the south the Parobamba district ( province of Pomabamba ).
