Sihuas (or Nuestra Señora de las Nieves de Sihuas ) is the capital of the Sihuas Province in the Ancash region of Peru . The city was founded on August 5, 1543 as La Villa de la Santísima Virgen María de las Nieves . It is also the administrative seat of the district of the same name . The city had 4,354 inhabitants at the 2017 census, 10 years earlier the population was 4029.

The city of Sihuas is located 390 km north of the state capital Lima on the eastern flank of the Western Peruvian Cordillera . The partly glaciated Cordillera Blanca mountain range rises to the west of the 2730  m high city . To the northeast of the city runs the Río Sihuas, the left source of the Río Rupac . The city is located on the national road 12A, which leads east from Chimbote to Uchiza in the river valley of the Río Huallaga .
