Chimbote is a port city in the South American Andean state of Peru . It is divided into the districts ( distritos ) Cercado de Chimbote, Nuevo Chimbote and Coishco with a total of 179,909 inhabitants (as of 2017). A total of around 365,000 people live in the metropolitan area, the two districts of Chimbote and Nuevo Chimbote . It is the largest city in the Peruvian region of Ancash and one of the largest cities in Peru. The city is located at the mouth of the Rio Santa on the Pacific coast between Trujillo and Lima .

The city of Chimbote is the seat of the Diocese of Chimbote .

The former president of Peru, Alejandro Toledo , grew up in Chimbote.

economy

In Chimbote there is no place for irrigated agriculture due to the narrowness of the coastal plain . Instead of letting the water flow unused into the sea, most of it is fed into the Trujillo oasis through tunnels and canals .

Chimbote owns a large steelworks - built by Gutehoffnungshütte - whose iron ore is transported from the mine in Marcona in southern Peru via the city's port. The coal comes from the anthracite mines in the Santa Valley.

The largest industry is fishing , more than 70 percent of Peru's fishing industry is based in Chimbote. In contrast to many other cities in Peru, tourism plays almost no role in Chimbote, as the city has been largely destroyed by earthquakes on several occasions and the smell of the fishing industry covers the city when the weather is bad. In addition, major damage was caused by El Niño (1983) and a tsunami (1996).

Culture

The cultural landscape of Chimbote is designed by the local cultural center Centro Cultural Centenario. The cultural center offers dance, painting and music lessons and is home to the city's only symphonic orchestra. Apart from the city library, which contains the cultural center, the Centenario is a non-profit organization, which is supported by sponsorship funds and is privately organized. Furthermore, volunteers from German-speaking countries come to the city every year to support the orchestra project of the cultural center and the musical training of young people.

Town twinning
