Marcona , also San Juan de Marcona , is a city in the southeast of the South American Andean state Peru with 15,933 inhabitants (as of 2017).

geography

Marcona is located in the south of the Ica region at 27 meters above sea level in a warm and arid climate on the south coast of the Pacific , 530 kilometers south of the capital Lima . Inland borders the coastal desert . The area around San Juan de Marcona is rich in iron , copper and marble .

The city consists of three parts: San Juan, San Nicolás and La Mina.

history

The city emerged after 1950, when the Marcona Mining Corporatión began to mine iron ore at Marcona on behalf of American companies. In 1953 the first ship to transport iron ore docked in the port of San Juan. In 1962 the port of San Nicolás was added. The government of Juan Velasco Alvarado nationalized the mine. From July 25, 1975 it was operated by the state company Minera Estatal del Hierro del Perú (State Mine of the Iron Industry of Peru), usually abbreviated as "Hierro Perú". In 1992 the company was privatized under Alberto Fujimori and is now part of the Chinese Shougang Group .

Infrastructure

Marcona is on the Transoceánica and the Panamericana . San Juan de Marcona Airport is three kilometers away. The Peruvian capital Lima can be reached by bus in around eight hours.
