The Santa Province is one of the 20 provinces of the Ancash administrative region in Peru . The provincial area is 4004.99 km², the population was 435,807 in 2017. The administrative seat is the coastal city of Chimbote .
Geographical location
The province of Santa forms the northernmost coastal province of the Ancash region. It stretches over a 50 km long section of the Pacific coast and reaches up to 70 km inland. The lower reaches of the Río Santa runs along the northern provincial border . In the east of the province rises the northern part of the Cordillera Negra , a lower mountain range of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . In the south of the province lies the catchment area of the Río Nepeña , which only reaches the sea during heavy rain events such as the El Niño weather phenomenon .
Irrigated agriculture is practiced in the arid coastal region. The two bays, Bahía de Chimbote and Bahía de Samanco , lie along the coast.
The province of Santa borders on the neighboring administrative region of La Libertad in the north . The neighboring provinces within the Ancash region are from north to south: Pallasca , Corongo , Huaylas , Yungay and Casma .
