Location of the districts

The Pomabamba Province is one of 20 provinces in the Ancash administrative region in Peru . It has an area of ​​914.05 km². At the 2017 census, 24,794 people lived in the province. In 1993 the population was 26,276, in 2007 27,954. The administrative seat is the city of Pomabamba .

Geographical location

The province of Pomabamba lies between the Cordillera Blanca in the west and the upper reaches of the Río Marañón in the east. The glaciated mountains Pucajirca ( 6046  m ) and Taulliraju ( 5830  m ) lie on the western provincial border. The river Río Rupac (on the northern provincial border) and the two smaller rivers Quebrada Manta and Quebrada Cunyac drain most of the provincial area to the east to the Río Marañón. The rest of the provincial area in the southwest is drained via the Río Pacosbamba , a tributary of the Río Yanamayo .

Neighboring provinces within the Ancash region are: Sihuas in the north, Huaylas in the west, Yungay in the southwest and Mariscal Luzuriaga in the south. Beyond the Río Marañón is located in the northeast in the Administrative Region of La Libertad province Pataz and in the east in the administrative region of Huanuco province Marañón .

Administrative division

The Pomabamba Province consists of four districts ( distritos ). The district of Pomabamba is the seat of the provincial administration.
