The province of Aija is one of 20 provinces that make up the administrative region of Ancash in western Peru . The province was founded on March 5, 1936. Later parts of the original provincial area went to newly established neighboring provinces. The province of Aija currently has an area of 696.7 km². In 2017 the population was 6316. In 1993 it was 8657, in 2007 it was 7995. The administrative seat of the province is the town of the same name Aija .
Geographical location
The province of Aija is located in the Cordillera Negra , a mountain group of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . It extends over the upper catchment area of the Río Huarmey and in the west over the river valley of the Quebrada Cota Puquio , a tributary of the Río Culebras .
The province borders in the north with the province Huaraz , in the south and west with the province Huarmey and in the east with the province Recuay .

Parish
The parish of the capital Aija includes all five districts of the province. A partnership has existed between the parish of Santiago Apostol von Aija and the German parishes of St. Brigitta , St. Carolus and St. Gallus in Hohberg since 1991.
