The district of La Merced is located in the province of Aija in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was established on March 5, 1936. It has an area of 157 km². The 2017 census counted 1650 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2753, in 2007 it was 2377. The district administration is located in the 3272 m high village of La Merced with 281 inhabitants (as of 2017). La Merced is located 5 km north of the provincial capital Aija .
Geographical location
The district of La Merced is located on the western flank of the Cordillera Negra in the northeast of the province of Aija. The Río La Merced, a source river of the Río Aija , flows through the district in a south-westerly direction.
The district of La Merced borders in the south on the district Aija , in the extreme west on the district Coris , in the northwest on the district La Libertad ( province Huaraz ) and in the northeast and east on the district Huaraz (also in the province Huaraz).
