The Huaraz district is located in the Huaraz Province in the Ancash region of western Peru . The district has an area of 423 km². The 2017 census counted 65,005 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 44,771, in 2007 56,186. The district administration is located in the provincial and regional capital Huaraz, 3052 m above sea level, with 57,093 inhabitants (as of 2017).
Geographical location
The Huaraz District is located in the central southeast of the Huaraz Province. The district extends from the Cordillera Negra in the west to the Cordillera Blanca in the east. The Río Santa River crosses the high valley Callejón de Huaylas in between in a northerly direction. In the east, the main ridge of the Cordillera Blanca with the peaks Nevado Andavite, Nevado Carhuascancha and Nevado Tunsho runs along the district boundary .
The district of Huaraz borders in the southwest with the districts Aija and La Merced (both in the province of Aija ), in the west with the districts La Libertad and Pira , in the north with the district Independencia , in the east with the districts Huántar and Chavín de Huántar (both in the province of Huari ), in the southeast to the district of Olleros and in the central south to the district of Recuay ( province of Recuay ).
