The Pampas Grande district is located in the Huaraz province in the Ancash region of western Peru . The district was founded on July 25, 1857. In 2012 the district and the capital of the same name received their current name. Before that they were called Pampas District or Pampas .

The Pampas Grande district has an area of ​​352 km². The 2017 census counted 1044 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1594, in 2007 it was 1310. The district administration is located in the 3699  m high village of Pampas Grande with 356 inhabitants (as of 2017). Pampas Grande is 35 km west-southwest of the provincial capital Huaraz .

Geographical location

The Pampas Grande district is located in the west of the Cordillera Negra in the west of the Huaraz province. The Río Grande, the middle reaches of the Río Casma , flows west along the northwestern district boundary.

The Pampas Grande district borders in the southwest with the district Culebras ( Huarmey province ), in the west with the districts Casma and Yaután (both in the province Casma ), in the north with the district Pariacoto , in the northeast with the district Colcabamba , in the east with the La Libertad district and the Huanchay district in the south .
