Jimmy Vérove

Jimmy Vérove (born September 24, 1970 in Gravelines ) is a retired French basketball player .

career

Vérove, son of basketball player Yves-Marie Vérove , made his first division debut at CSP Limoges in the 1988/89 season . In 1989 and 1990 he won the French championship with CSP, in 1990 he moved to ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne for one year , and in 1991/92 the 1.98 meter tall winger was under contract in Mulhouse . There he was a teammate of the American Joe Bryant , who often asked him  to do throwing training with his son Kobe Bryant and then bring him back to his parents. Vérove stayed in the same hotel as the Bryant family for three months. When Kobe Bryant made the leap into the NBA , when he looked at the newspaper he suddenly realized that it was the player with whom he had trained in Mulhouse in his youth, Vérove later said.

Vérove returned to Limoges in 1992. Due to a bacterial infection, he was in a coma for 15 days, but he returned to the field during the 1992/93 season, becoming French champions with Limoges in 1993 and European championship champions . In the latter competition Vérove was ordered by coach Božidar Maljković in the final against Benetton Treviso in the starting line-up, he scored three points in 20 minutes. In the French league, Vérove scored 5.6 points per game in the same season.

In 1994 he was again French champion with Limoges. In 1995 they reached the semi-finals in the European Cup, this time they were eliminated by Real Madrid , Vérove scored two points against the Spaniards. He moved to Lyon in 1995, where the winger recorded the best statistical values ​​of his time in the French premier league in the 1995/96 season, namely 12.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists per encounter.

In 1996/97 he played with JDA Dijon , in the following years in Brest, Gravelines, Besançon and again in Brest. Vérove was named the best player in the French second division in the 1997/98 season, and in 2005 he won the second division championship with Brest. In the same year he was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident and was in a coma. He continued his playing career afterwards. In the first division he came to a total of 334 inserts and 2420 points. He played twelve international matches for France. He ended his playing career at the age of 47.

Vérove started a coaching career in 2017, looked after the women of the Cavigal Nice Basket 06 club in 2017/18, and in February 2018 he became assistant coach at the men's first division club Pau-Lacq-Orthez .
