The district of Pira is located in the province of Huaraz in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was founded on November 10, 1917. It has an area of ​​261 km². The 2017 census counted 3522 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 4098 and in 2007 3853. The district administration is located in the 3570  m high village of Pira with 771 inhabitants (as of 2017). Pira is located 20 km west-southwest of the provincial capital Huaraz .

Geographical location

The district of Pira is located on the western flank of the Cordillera Negra in the central west of the province of Huaraz. The Río Chacchan, the upper reaches of the Río Casma , flows west along the northwestern district boundary . Its left tributary Río Pira drains the south of the district.

The Pira district borders in the southwest with the La Libertad district , in the northwest with the Colcabamba district , in the northwest with the Pariacoto district , in the east with the districts Yungar ( Carhuaz province ), Jangas , Independencia and Huaraz and in the south with the La Libertad district .
