The district of Yungar , alternative spelling: District Yúngar , is located in the province of Carhuaz in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was founded on November 22, 1868. It has an area of 45.3 km². The 2017 census counted 3223 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2813, in 2007 it was 3159. The district administration is located in the 2828 m high village of Yungar with 753 inhabitants (as of 2017). Yungar is 12 km south-southeast of the provincial capital Carhuaz .
Geographical location
The Yungar District is located on the eastern flank of the Cordillera Negra in the southwest of the Carhuaz Province. The Río Santa flows north along the eastern district boundary.
The district of Yungar borders in the north on the district Anta , in the extreme northeast on the district Pariahuanca , in the extreme southeast on the district Tarica ( province Huaraz ), in the south on the district Jangas (province Huaraz) and in the southwest on the district Pira (province Huaraz).
