The district of San Miguel de Aco is located in the province of Carhuaz in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was founded on December 7, 1953. It has an area of ​​123 km². The 2017 census counted 2,483 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2280, in 2007 it was 2552. The district administration is located in the 2925  m high village of San Miguel de Aco (or Aco for short) with 406 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Miguel de Aco is 13 km southeast of the provincial capital Carhuaz .

Geographical location

The district of San Miguel de Aco is located on the western flank of the Cordillera Blanca in the extreme southeast of the province of Carhuaz. In the far east runs the main ridge of the Cordillera Blanca with the peaks Nevado Rurichinchay and the Nevados Minoyo. In the far east lies the glacial lake Laguna Minoyo.

San Miguel de Aco district is bordered to the west by the district Pariahuanca , on the north by the district Marcará , on the east by the district Huari ( province of Huari ), in the southeast of the district Independencia ( Huaraz Province ) and in the south by the district Tarica ( also in Huaraz Province).
