The Huari District is located in the Huari Province in the Ancash region in central western Peru . The district was founded on October 17, 1893. It has an area of ​​398 km². The 2017 census counted 9178 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 8915, in 2007 it was 9738. The administrative seat of the district is the provincial capital Huari , which is 3149  m high .

Geographical location

The Huari district is located on the eastern flank of the Cordillera Blanca , which forms a partially glaciated section of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The district is located in the northwest of the Huari Province and extends along the right bank of the south-flowing Río Huari . The western border of the district forms the main ridge of the Cordillera Blanca. The southern district boundary is the Río Rurec, a tributary of the Río Mosna . In the southwest is the 6222  m high Nevado Chinchey . The western part of the district is located in the Huascarán National Park .

The Huari district is bordered to the south by the district Huántar , in the southwest of the district Independencia , in the northwest to the districts of San Miguel de Aco and Marcará (both in the province of Carhuaz ) and to the district Chacas ( Asunción Province ). In the north, the Huari District borders the San Luis District ( Carlos Fermín Fitzcarrald Province ). To the east of the Huari district are the Cajay and Huachis districts .
