Arno Bergmann (* 16th December 1882 in Cursdorf , † 5. November 1960 in Arnstadt ) was a German physicist , teacher and lepidopterist .

Life

Bergmann attended the village school and the secondary school in Rudolstadt and Saalfeld and then studied mathematics , chemistry , physics and mineralogy in Leipzig and Göttingen . He continued his physics studies in Jena and received his doctorate there in 1907 with the essay Contributions to the Knowledge of the Ultra-Red Emission Spectra of Alkalis . The ultra-red series of alkali metal spectra discovered in this process , which Eduard Riecke gave the name " Bergmann series ", made an important contribution to the knowledge of the emission spectra and the behavior of the atomic shell . In Arnstadt he then worked as a teacher in the school service. He was also interested in lepidopterology and he became an important specialist in the Thuringian butterfly fauna. Questions about ecology and breeding, phenomena of albinism and melanism as well as the influence of climatic conditions on the design of forms were his focus. These topics also formed the basis of his seven-volume work “Die Großschmetterlinge Mitteldeutschlands”, which comprises a total of approx. 5000 pages, and which he illustrated with plenty of photos of butterflies and characteristic places where they were found.

Works

Bergmann's seven-volume work Die Großschmetterlinge Mitteldeutschlands With special consideration of the formation of forms, the vegetation and the communities in Thuringia as well as the interdependence with the fauna of Europe After own observations and experiments as well as with the use of contributions from Professor Dr. Arthur Petry and numerous Thuringian entomologists was published in the 1950s by Urania Verlag , Jena and comprises the following volumes:

  • Volume 1 The nature of Central Germany and its butterfly communities
  • Volume 2 butterflies, distribution, forms and communities
  • Volume 3 Spinners and hawkers, spread, forms and communities
  • Volume 4/1 owls, distribution, forms and communities
  • Volume 4/2 owls, distribution, forms and communities
  • Volume 5/1 Spanner, Spread, Forms and Communities
  • Volume 5/2 Spanner, Spread, Forms and Communities

Bergmann published many other individual publications in the entomological specialist press.
