action

Mia Goldig works as a master gardener in the Botanical Garden in Berlin and loves her job very much. Not only does she know almost everything about plants, she loves and understands them and always has new ideas. The young woman is also very popular with her colleagues, as she always has an open ear for everyone. However, Mia has problems with her self-confidence and does not like to focus on herself, she prefers to stay in the background, and she has to stutter again and again when many eyes are fixed on her.

When Mia's mother Helene, who has managed the Botanical Garden up to now, is looking for a successor, the reluctant Mia doesn't even think of applying for the post. Even Helene does not trust her daughter to be able to run the Botanical Garden and above all to find financially strong sponsors who are urgently needed. Rather, Helene believes that her older daughter Marissa, who works as an event manager, is the right person for this position. Marissa is very confident and clever.

Mrs. Holle runs a shop in the botanical garden. She is the heart and the good soul there. Ms. Holle is convinced that Mia is exactly the right person and that no one could manage the Botanical Garden better. So she encourages Mia to apply. And then there is the horticultural entrepreneur Lennart Sommer, who supports Mia. The young woman likes him very much.

After Mia heard from her sister that she was planning to completely redesign the Botanical Garden, she asked Ms. Holle to help her with her own application. Mia's mother wants Mia to forget her application very quickly. In the meantime, however, Jakob Sommer, the lawyer for the family who has to decide who should manage the garden in the future, knows that Mia has also applied. He tells Helene Goldig that the contract should be awarded to the one who can win the urgently needed investor for the garden first. However, Helene Goldig continues to try to get Mia to withdraw and influence her daughter in her favor.

Marissa immediately starts trying to get the people in the Botanical Gardens to her side. Mia, on the other hand, heeded Ms. Holle's advice to get new clothes until she thought she was someone else, maybe that could help her to overcome her stutter, since an important event is taking place that evening. To Mia's surprise, Lennart Sommer also turns up there, as it turns out, he is the son of the lawyer Jakob Sommer. Mia tells Lennart about her plans and that she would like to expand the botanical garden in the area of medicinal plants. Then, however, Marissa appears and takes Lennart Sommer into possession. She also has to hear from her mother that she doesn't want Mia Marissa to spoil opportunities with her stuttering. This leads to Mia feeling very insecure again.

Marissa immediately begins to spin intrigues against Mia. She deliberately tells her own mother lies about her sister, who passes them on to Jakob Sommer without further verification. When Mia tries to talk to Sommer, he slams the door on her face. Lennart is angry, but cannot change his father's mind. During a trip together, Mia Lennart confesses that she has found that she does not have to stutter whenever he is around. He grounds them. Lennart says he feels the same way and there is a first kiss.

When the contract with Marissa is supposed to be signed, the entire workforce is present. The investor Pechmeyer is also there. At the moment when Helene wants to give her daughter the contract to sign, she hears Pechmeyer talking about the fact that of course more than half of the workforce has to be laid off, because with the concept that they have in mind, hardly that many would be left Gardener needed. Two thirds of the area would be concreted in for the bars and shops ... He doesn't get any further because Marissa interrupts him, you can talk about that later. Helene Goldig can hardly believe what she has just heard, Marissa replies in a raised voice that this is the future. There is no other option. Mia contradicts her sister, who then wants to expose her and asks to explain it once. Mia pulls herself together and this time she manages to present her concept about medicinal plants without stuttering. Pechmeyer thinks that if you do it that way, you can no longer count on your money. Helene Goldig now knows that she recommended the wrong daughter as her successor and, to Pechmeyer, she would rather die than allow Marissa to implement her concept. The cheers among the workforce are great. Mia assures people that she is sure she can raise money. As if on cue, Ms. Holle appears and introduces Ms. Hahnenschrei. Mia had saved her life with her presence of mind the night before when everyone else had been idle. She assures Mia that she will support the Botanical Garden with a sum that is guaranteed to help. Marissa is so angry that she shakes a scaffolding, whereupon dark earth falls down and envelops her after white flowers have previously trickled down on Mia. Mia thanks Ms. Holle warmly. Lennart, who broke down his car, is also here and Mia's happiness is complete.

Production notes, publication

Mrs. Holles Garten is a production by Sabotage Films GmbH. The shooting, which took place mainly in the Botanical Garden Berlin , extended from April 15 to May 16, 2019.

The film was first broadcast on December 8, 2019 on ZDF .

background

Cornelia Froboess answered the question, what makes Ms. Holle the good soul and secret owner of the Botanical Cooking: “The garden is the soul of Ms. Holle. She sees everything, knows all the plants, all employees and their characters. ”When asked what Ms. Holle sees in Mia, the answer was:“ Mia is like a daughter to Ms. Holle and the only one around who has the heart and hands to liven up the garden. She also loves the workers and is full of human love. ”The fairy tale Frau Holle never goes out of fashion,“ because there will always be 'good and bad' ”. When asked where she can relax privately, Froboess replied: "In 'my garden' on the 'Rinklhof' in Upper Bavaria."

Producer Annedore von Donop explained: “For me, the focus of the film is a description of the precarious state of our planet and thus a political message: some want to concretise the world (the garden) to put rides on it, while others understand that we are depend fundamentally on the healing powers of nature ... and thus the added value of allegorical storytelling that is inherent in fairy tales is represented. "

reception

Audience rating

When it was first broadcast, the film was viewed by 5.19 million viewers with a market share of 15.3 percent.

criticism

The critics of the TV magazine TV Spielfilm pointed their thumbs down and said that there were “no doubts about good and bad”. "The unjustly treated Mia shows so much self-pity that one would like to shake her with her innocent expression". The sobering conclusion was: "Hopelessly overdrawn figures without pep".

Rainer Tittelbach, on the other hand, saw it very differently and gave the film four out of six possible stars on his tittelbach.tv website and said that the freshness of spring is reflected "in the physiognomy of the protgaonist". [...] "In addition to Froboess and Stolze", "Klara Deutschmann and Lavinia Wilson are not only two top-class, but also well-cast leading actresses". It is true that “the story is simple and the moral is a bit plain”, which “for a fairy tale film adaptation” must be “not a drawback”. "The 'feelings' that you develop for the heroine as a viewer [are] anyway a stronger drive for the 'tension' than the simple dramaturgy". A film, Tittelbach continued, "certainly not made for the critics - and yet" "the longing for clarity and the desire for relief far beyond the 'heart cinema' level is satisfied". There are even “subtexts”. Lavinia Wilson is "the perfect beast". Klara Deutschmann embodies the ideal counter-image, who in this fairy tale drama shows more of the idiosyncratic naturalness with which she carries the ARD series ' Reiterhof Wildenstein ' [...]. It is "the heart not only in the plot", it is "also the heart of the film". It should also “not be overlooked” that the cast is “formidable and not comparable to other Herzkino productions”. Tittelbach said that with a “cool critic's mind some arguments against” the film could be found and answered himself: “But what should you do if you enjoyed the film? Write a criticism against your feelings? If not, are you not getting caught up in the film? But wouldn't anything else be a lie ?! For me, the case is clear: So it would be better to shake your head a few times and, if necessary, defend this modern fairy tale against possible critics. "

Sarah Kohlberger wrote in the TV magazine Prisma , “Frau Holles Garten”, “got by without snow”; but there is “a wonderfully flowery and green botanical garden. And that is exactly what “is about” in the modern version of the Grimm classic “[...].

The criticism of the film service was just as brief, as with TV Spielfilm : “A simple, modern version of the 'Frau Holle' fairy tale that never goes beyond shallow entertainment at pleasantly staged locations. The actresses try in vain to make their profile-less characters more interesting through excessive play. - From 12."
