The Urania publishing house is a German book publisher based in Freiburg . Urania Verlag was founded in Jena in 1924 and among other things published the socialist natural history journal Urania . The publishing house was forcibly closed during the Nazi era , but was re-established in Jena in 1947. It developed into a renowned non-fiction book publisher in the GDR with books on scientific and historical topics, especially the Urania - Society for the Dissemination of Scientific Knowledge . From 1963 the graphic quarter in Leipzig was the publishing house.

After the reunification of Germany , the publishing house was privatized. From 1994 it belonged to the Dornier publishing group in Stuttgart , this publishing location was given as early as 1990. The new focus of Urania's publishing program was on advice and hobby literature, with a focus on ornithology and ichthyology under artificial living conditions. In October 2006 the Herder publishing group from Freiburg took over the Dornier publishing group. Urania has since been listed as the imprint of Kreuz-Verlag . The Urania publishing house was one of the publishing houses of the mathematical student library from 1965 to 1990 .
