Dornier publishing group

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Verlagsgruppe Dornier had a checkered history last an association of German publishers Theseus, Luechow, Urania and cross in Stuttgart .

history

The publishing group developed out of the Theseus-Verlag , Munich and Zurich , founded in 1975 by Silvius Dornier (first son of Claude Dornier from his second marriage) , which mainly published Buddhist literature.

After the fall of the Wall, the industrialist Silvius Dornier took the risk and bought up some publishing houses that were already active in the GDR. They were geared towards cultural and cultural history as well as military history. The EA Seemann publishing house (Leipzig), which was bought first, was followed by Henschel Verlag (Berlin), part of the GDR military publishing house , Edition Leipzig (Leipzig) and later Urania.

The takeover of the book publishing division from the GDR military publishing house went through a stopover. First a buying company named 'Silvius Dornier Verlagsgesellschaft' (SDVG) was formed, whose name the publisher temporarily bore. Then the company was renamed BVH Brandenburgische Verlagshaus GmbH, shortened to Brandenburgisches Verlagshaus.

The publishers remained independent publishers under the newly founded Dornier Medienholding GmbH based in Berlin. The holding was apparently founded in Munich in 1992.

Urania Verlag (Leipzig) in 1994 and Kreuz-Verlag (Stuttgart) in 1996 were acquisitions in the field of spirituality and help in life .

With retroactive effect from January 1, 1996, the previously independent East German publishers will be merged with the Dornier media holding company. Since then, the postfix "in the Dornier Medienholding" has been appended to the name of the publisher in the printed matter.

At the end of 1997 the Brandenburg publishing house largely ceased its work and ended its activities in 1998. Only a small part of the program could be accommodated at Henschel and some was sold. The remaining rights went to Siegler & Co. KG Verlag für Zeitarchive GmbH in 2004 and from there to Edition Lempertz in 2008 .

On September 1, 2001, Dornier Medienholding was renamed Verlagsgruppe Dornier GmbH. In doing so, the publishing group wanted to be more clearly perceptible as a media company in the publishing industry. The publishing group, whose sole owner was still Silvius Dornier, comprised the seven publishers Henschel, Theseus, Urania (with Ravensburger Ratgeber), Brandenburgisches Verlagshaus, EA Seemann, Edition Leipzig and Kreuz at the time. The names each stood for an individual publisher profile and independent program focus.

With the purchase of Lüchow-Verlag in 2002, the area of spirituality and help in life was strengthened.

Up until 2002 the publishing house was split between the area for central / existential questions of life and the area of culture and cultural history. At the end of 2002 it was decided to discontinue the cultural and cultural history department. The publishers Henschel, EA Seemann and Edition Leipzig were affected. The Leipzig location should be closed. The duties of the publishing director of the Dornier publishing group were divided up.

Two employees of the publishing group Dornier, Jürgen A. Bach and Bernd Kolf took over the publishing houses Henschel, Seemann and Edition Leipzig and in 2003 created the publishing group Seemann Henschel with headquarters in Leipzig. The new publishing group took over the orientation of the publishers in culture and cultural history, some employees and the Leipzig location. New premises in Berlin were sought for Henschel Verlag. Bernd Kolf took over the management from Berlin.

After the separation, the Dornier publishing group relocated its headquarters and Urania Verlag from Berlin to Stuttgart in 2003 .

Until 2004, attempts were made to establish the synonym VeDo Verlag next to the name of the publisher for the publications in the area of central / existential questions of life.

On the occasion of his 80th birthday, the previous sole shareholder, publisher and patron Silvius Dornier reorganized his business and withdrew from active publishing activities. On October 1, 2006, the Herder publishing group took over the Dornier publishing group - with silence about the takeover modalities and the purchase price - and bundled all commercial and sales forces in Freiburg. The individual publishers of the Dornier publishing group were then organized as imprints under the umbrella of Verlag Kreuz GmbH . The program work initially remained in Stuttgart until 2008 and has been gradually moved to Freiburg since then.

The handicraft books of Urania Verlag were merged with the creative publisher Christophorus, which had been taken over by Verlag Herder , and sold on January 1, 2009 by Verlag Kreuz to OZ Verlag in Rheinfelden with the approval of the Federal Cartel Office . With effect from January 1, 2009, the Kreuz publishing house sold the two areas Theseus and Lüchow to the J. Kamphausen media group in Bielefeld, which is thus expanding its market position in the book area of Buddhism, holistic healing and lifestyle. The Kreuz publishing house is thus concentrating on the core issues of spirituality, theology and psychology. Thus, the Dornier publishers no longer exist today as a publishing group, but as individual publishers and imprints in several other publishing groups.

program

The titles published by the publishing group mainly belonged to the areas of help in life, spirituality , religion and psychology as well as culture and cultural history . The authors of the publishing group included Walter Conrad , Anselm Grün and Jörg Zink .
