The district of Chavín de Huántar is located in the province of Huari in the Ancash region in the central west of Peru . The district was founded on October 17, 1893. It has an area of 434.13 km². The 2017 census counted 7,971 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 9256, in 2007 it was 9088. The administrative seat of the district is the small town of Chavín de Huántar with 2384 inhabitants , located on the left bank of the Río Mosna at an altitude of 3137 m (as of 2017). There is a road connection from the Mosna valley across the mountains to the west to the town of Cátac in the province of Recuay . The well-known archaeological site of Chavín de Huántar is located in the district .
Geographical location
The district of Chavín de Huántar is located on the eastern flank of the Cordillera Blanca , which forms a partially glaciated section of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The district is located in the western south of the Huari province and extends along the left bank of the river Mosna, which flows northwards. The western border of the district forms the main ridge of the Cordillera Blanca. In the extreme northwest lies the 6395 m high Nevado Huantsán . The western part of the district is located in the Huascarán National Park .
The district of Chavín de Huántar borders in the southwest on the districts Cátac and Ticapampa (both in the province of Recuay), in the northwest on the districts of Olleros and Huaraz (both in the province of Huaraz ), in the north on the district Huántar , in the east on the district San Marcos and in the south to the Aquia district ( Bolognesi province ).
