Chavín de Huántar is a town in the Huari province of the Ancash administrative region in Peru . The population was 2384 at the 2017 census, 10 years earlier it was 2104. The population mainly lives from agriculture, such as the cultivation of potatoes and grain.

Chavín de Huántar is located at the mouth of the Río Huachecsa in the Río Mosna at an altitude of 3,160 meters.
Transport links
- A road runs along the Río Mosna. Down the valley it reaches the provincial capital Huari via the towns of San Marcos and Pomachaca . In the other direction, it leads up the eastern slope of the Cordillera Blanca to the Kawish tunnel ( 4516 m ) and from there down the western slope of the Cordillera Blanca into the Río Santa Valley to the town of Cátac ( 3540 m ).
- A footpath leads over the Yanashallash Pass ( 4700 m ) to the village of Olleros (3450 m) in the Río Santa Valley.
Attractions
- On the outskirts on the right side of the Río Huachecsa is the famous temple complex of Chavín de Huántar
- About two kilometers south in the village of Quercos there is a small thermal bath (Baños Termales de Chavín).
