Huari (or Santo Domingo de Huari ) is the capital of the Huari Province in the Ancash region of Peru . The city was founded on August 8, 1572 as Santo Domingo de Huari . It is also the administrative seat of the district of the same name . The city had 4,850 inhabitants at the 2017 census, 10 years earlier the population was 4406.

The city of Huari is located 300 km north of the state capital Lima on the eastern flank of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . To the west of the 3149  m high city rises the partly glaciated Cordillera Blanca mountain range . To the east of the city runs the Río Huari , the left source river of the Río Puchca .
