The district of Cátac is located in the province of Recuay in the Ancash region in the central west of Peru . The district was established on January 8, 1965. It has an area of 1018.27 km². The 2017 census counted 3,907 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 4053, in 2007 4036. The administrative seat of the district is the 3566 m high town of Cátac with 2776 inhabitants (as of 2017). The provincial capital Recuay is 9 km further north.
Geographical location
The district of Cátac is located in the extreme southeast of the province of Recuay. It includes the southern end of the high valley Callejón de Huaylas , which is traversed by the Río Santa in a northerly direction. In the east, the district extends to the Cordillera Blanca , which forms a partially glaciated section of the Peruvian Western Cordillera .
The district of Cátac borders in the north on the district Ticapampa , in the northeast on the district Chavín de Huántar ( province Huari ), in the southeast on the district Aquia ( province Bolognesi ), in the south on the districts Chiquián and Cajacay (also in the province of Bolognesi) and in the west to the districts of Pampas Chico , Marca , Huayllapampa , Tapacocha , Cotaparaco and Aija (the latter in the province of Aija ).
