The district of Aija is located in the province of Aija in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of 162 km². The 2017 census counted 2130 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2430, in 2007 it was 2036. The district administration is located in the provincial capital of Aija, 3363 m high, with 892 inhabitants (as of 2017).
Geographical location
The district of Aija is located on the western flank of the Cordillera Negra in the southeast of the province of Aija. The area is drained via the Río Aija, upper reaches of the Río Huarmey , to the southwest.
The district of Aija borders in the southwest with the district Succha , in the west with the districts Huacllán and Coris , in the north with the district La Merced , in the extreme northeast with the district Huaraz ( province Huaraz ), in the east with the districts Recuay , Ticapampa and Cátac (all three in the province of Recuay ) and in the southeast to the districts of Cotaparaco (also in the province of Recuay) and Malvas ( province of Huarmey ).
