The district of Recuay is located in the province of Recuay in the Ancash region in the central west of Peru . The district was founded on July 25, 1857. It has an area of 142.96 km². The 2017 census counted 4406 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 6050, in 2007 it was 5015. The administrative seat of the district is the provincial capital of Recuay , situated 3394 m above sea level, with 2395 inhabitants (as of 2017). The Choquerecuay archaeological site is located in the district .
Geographical location
The district of Recuay is located in the central north of the province of Recuay. It comprises an approximately 7 km long section of the valley in the south of the high valley Callejón de Huaylas , through which the Río Santa river flows in a northerly direction. In the south runs the Quebrada Anas Cancha, in the north the Río Olleros (also Río Negro). The district extends about 14.5 km to the east to the Cordillera Blanca , which forms a partially glaciated section of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . To the west, the district extends about 9 km to the watershed of the Cordillera Negra .
The district of Recuay borders in the north on the district Olleros ( province Huaraz ), in the south on the district Ticapampa , in the west on the district Aija ( province Aija ) and in the northwest on the district Huaraz (province Huaraz).
