Callejon de Huaylas
Callejón de Huaylas ("Alley of Huaylas", Quechua : Waylas ) is a mountain valley in the Ancash region in the north-western Andean high mountains of Peru .
location
The Callejón de Huaylas is traversed along its entire length of 150 km by the Río Santa in a north-westerly direction and bordered by two mountain ranges, the snow-capped Cordillera Blanca ("White Mountain Range") in the northeast and the Cordillera Negra ("Black Mountain Range") in the southwest. The Huascarán protrudes from the Cordillera Blanca , at 6768 m the highest mountain peak in Peru. The valley lies at an altitude of about 4000 m in the south and less than 2000 m in the north, where the Río Santa leaves the valley of the Callejón de Huaylas .

The population of the Callejón de Huaylas consists of Quechua-speaking indigenous people (variant Ancashino ), most of them small farmers in the mountain villages of the valley, and Spanish-speaking mestizos in the small towns along the Río Santa. Politically and economically, the mestizos dominate, but emigration, training and tourism have triggered a certain change in this dichotomy in recent decades.
In the center of Callejón de Huaylas is the city of Huaraz , capital of the Ancash region. Other important places in the valley are Recuay , Carhuaz , Yungay and Caraz .

The climate in the valley is temperate, subtropical and dry, the wet season lasts from October to April. The annual average daily temperature is 16.6 ° C, the night average temperature is 12.6 ° C.
meaning
In the history of Peru, the valley was the cradle of the Chavín culture, which dates from around 900 to 300 BC. A significant trade network and an advanced agricultural culture had developed. Today the valley is still an important agricultural cultivation area, and a popular tourist destination for mountain and climbing tours in the adjacent mountain ranges.
