Caraz is the capital of the province of Huaylas and the district of Caraz and is located in the valley of the Río Santa in the Andes high mountains of northwestern Peru in the Ancash region .
location
Caraz is located in the northern part of the Callejón de Huaylas in the densely populated and fertile valley of the Santa River. It is framed by the snow-capped mountain peaks of the Huandoy (6395 m), the Nevado Santa Cruz (6259 m), the double peaks Caraz I (6025 m) and Caraz II (6020 m), and the Alpamayo (5947 m), whose summit in 1966 was named the most beautiful mountain in the world in Munich.
The city lies at an altitude of 2290 m above sea level between the Cordillera Blanca in the east and the Cordillera Negra in the west. The nearest town is Yungay 12 kilometers upstream. The Cañón del Pato (“Duck Gorge”) begins about 20 kilometers downstream from Caraz .
Due to its protected location above the river, it is the only larger settlement in the Santa Valley that has so far been spared earthquakes, landslides and spring tides.
