Recuay is the administrative seat of the province of Recuay in the Ancash region and is located on the left bank of the north-flowing Río Santa in the Andes high mountains of western Peru . The 2017 census counted 2,476 inhabitants.

Recuay lies in the upper part of the densely populated and fertile middle reaches of the Santa River known as Callejón de Huaylas . The city lies at an altitude of 3394 m above sea level between the Cordillera Blanca in the east and the Cordillera Negra in the west. The closest towns are Cátac 9 kilometers upstream and Huaraz 27 kilometers downstream.
history
Grave finds near Recuay are assigned to the so-called Recuay culture (approx. 200 BC to 600 AD). a. with figural ceramic vessels made of white clay with red and black patterns.
On December 19, 1626 , the Peruvian Archbishop Gonzalo de Ocampo, born in Madrid in 1572, died in Recuay .
Recuay was badly damaged in the earthquake on May 31, 1970 .

Recuay is located in an important agricultural and livestock area.
Two important access roads branch off to the east at Recuay to Chavín , which enable the eastern access to the Cordillera Blanca via the pass roads "Túnel de Kowish" (4550 m) and "Yanashallash" (4700 m).
To the west, the provincial capital is connected to the Pacific coast via the Huancapeti Pass (4680 m) and the city of Aija .
