Johann Nepomuk Krieger (born February 4, 1865 in Unterwiesenbach , † February 10, 1902 in San Remo ) was a German draftsman and selenographer .

He was born in Bavaria as the son of a master brewer. At a young age, his interest turned to astronomy . He only attended school until he was 15 years old. When he made an inheritance, however, he used the money to set up an observatory on the outskirts of Munich . He was inspired by the director of the Cologne observatory to devote his life to studying and observing the moon .

Krieger decided to make an accurate map of the moon. To do this, he obtained a number of low-resolution negatives of the lunar surface. These were created at the Lick Observatory and the Paris Observatory. He enlarged these images and used them to get precise positioning for his resulting drawings. These illustrations, made with charcoal, pencil and ink, surpassed all previous moon maps in accuracy and richness of detail and are still regarded as works of art today.

He saw the publication of the first 28 illustrations as Volume 1 of his Lunar Atlas in 1898. However, his health had suffered badly and he died soon afterwards. In 1912 his remaining drawings and sketches were published as Volume 2 by the Austrian selenographer Rudolf König .

The warrior crater on the moon was named after him in 1935.
