The Pampas Chico district is located in the Recuay province in the Ancash region in central western Peru . The district was established on October 31, 1941. It has an area of ​​100.51 km². The 2017 census counted 923 residents. In 1993 the population was 1046, in 2007 it was 1618. The administrative seat of the district is the 3505  m high village of Pampas Chico with 174 inhabitants (as of 2017). This is just 45 km south of the provincial capital Recuay . The Hatun Machay archaeological site is located in the district .

Geographical location

The Pampas Chico district is located in the central south of the Recuay province. It is located on the western flank of the Cordillera Negra . The northeastern district boundary forms the watershed to the Río Santa, which runs further northeast . The Río Fortaleza flows west along the southern district boundary and drains the area. The Pampas Chico district borders on the Marca district in the west, the Cátac district in the northeast and the Cajacay district ( Bolognesi province ) in the south .

Localities and settlements

In addition to Pampas Chico there are the localities ( Centros poblados ) Mayorarca with 232 inhabitants and Huambo. Anexos and Caseríos are Colquimarca, Jacar and Conococha. There are also the Comunidades campesinas San Francisco de Asís (near Huambo) and San Andrés (near Pampas Chico).
