Friedrich August Schäffer

Friedrich August Schäffer (born October 13, 1800 in Messel near Darmstadt ; † March 19, 1867 in Darmstadt) was a German educator and author of geographical and historical treatises.

Life

The father, Ludwig Justus Adolph Schäffer (* 1765 in Alsfeld , † September 29, 1806 in Messel ), was a Lutheran pastor in Messel since 1790 . His "Cantata for the high wedding celebration of the Sr. Landgravial Pass of the Hereditary Prince Ludwig of Hesse-Darmstadt with the Pass of Princess Wilhelmine Louise of Baden " was published in 1804 in a setting by Gottfried Harbordt in Darmstadt. After the early death of the father, the mother with Friedrich and his siblings moved to Darmstadt, where he spent several private institutions and high school educators attended, which he after the confirmation left to mathematics to study. However, he returned to high school and studied the Greek and Latin languages ​​extensively. Funded by the Director of the High School, Johann Georg Zimmermann (1754-1829), he studied from 1823 to 1825 at the University of Giessen theology , then turned the school subject to. Together with his friend Heinrich Eduard Scriba , he took over the private school from Johann Wilhelm Ernst Wägner and another from W. Heyer. In the autumn of 1829 they combined their schools with Karl Heumann, Karl Lanz (later a teacher at the Darmstadt grammar school) and Albrecht Weiß to form a general preparatory school for grammar school and secondary school. Until the autumn of 1831 Schäffer worked as a teacher and vice-principal at this “private Progymnasial- und Realschulanstalt” in Darmstadt. On July 12, 1836, he was appointed teacher and on January 19, 1864, director of the Darmstadt secondary school.

Schäffer was married to Christina Catarina Schwarz († July 2, 1888); In 1867 his widow and son Heinrich Ludwig Schäffer lived in Darmstadt, Niederramstädterstrasse. 37. Schäffer was a member of the "Society for Geography and Related Sciences in Darmstadt" and in its board of directors in 1845/46, and of the "Historical Society for the Grand Duchy of Hesse". From September 30 to October 4, 1844, he participated as a member of the 8th Assembly of German Philologists, School Men and Orientalists in Darmstadt.

In addition to articles in various magazines, Schäffer wrote a description of the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt as a manual for school use and a school geography for elementary schools. Around 1860 he revised geographical maps, published as color lithographs by L. Ewald. His name appears as “Dr. F. Schäffer ”. His pamphlets against Karl Lanz had already appeared in 1832 and 1833.
