The district of Cajacay is located in the Province of Bolognesi in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. The district area is 185 km². The 2017 census counted 1,811 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1756, in 2007 it was 1686. The district administration is located in the 2599 m high village of Cajacay with 710 inhabitants (as of 2017). Cajacay is located 31 km west of the provincial capital Chiquián .
Geographical location
The district of Cajacay is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the north-west of the Bolognesi province. The district extends over the headwaters of the Río Fortaleza , which drains the area to the west.
The district of Cajacay borders in the southwest with the district Huayllacayán , in the west with the district Antonio Raymondi , in the northwest with the district Marca , in the north with the district Pampas Chico , in the northeast with the district Cátac (the three aforementioned districts are in the Province of Recuay ), to the east to the districts of Chiquián and Ticllos and to the southeast to the districts of Cajamarquilla and Ocros district (both in the Ocros province ).
