The Paucas district is located in the Huari Province in the Ancash region in central western Peru . The district was established on May 10, 1955. It has an area of ​​135.31 km². The 2017 census counted 1561 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2494, in 2007 it was 2048. The administrative seat of the district is the 3421  m high village of Paucas with 686 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Geographical location

The Paucas district is located east of the Cordillera Blanca , which forms a partially glaciated section of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The district is located in the northeast of the Huari Province and lies on the left bank of the Río Marañón , which runs along the northern district border. The Río Puchca runs along the western district boundary .

The Paucas district is bordered in the southwest by the Anra and Uco districts in the west by the Chingas and Llamellín districts (both in the Antonio Raymondi province ). In the north, the district borders on the districts of Huacaybamba and Cochabamba (both in the province of Huacaybamba ) and in the east on the district of Huacchis .
