Antamina mine

The district of San Marcos is located in the province of Huari in the Ancash region in central western Peru . The district was established on May 3, 1955. It has an area of ​​556.75 km². The 2017 census counted 17,033 residents. In 1993 the population was 11,660, in 2007 13,607. The administrative seat of the district is the 2964  m high town of San Marcos with 2989 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Mining is in progress in the district east of the city of San Marcos. The Contonga and Antamina mines are located there. The latter is one of the largest copper and zinc mines in the world. Various ores, including molybdenum, have been mined here in open-cast mining since the late 1990s .

Geographical location

The district of San Marcos lies on the eastern flank of the Cordillera Blanca , which forms a partly glaciated section of the Peruvian western cordillera . The district is located in the east-south of the Huari Province and extends along the right bank of the Río Mosna, which flows north .

The San Marcos district is bordered to the west by the District of Chavin de Huantar , in the northwest on the district Huántar , in the northeast to the districts Huachis and San Pedro de Chana , to the east by the district Llata ( province Huamalíes ), in the southeast of the district Huallanca ( Province of Bolognesi ) and in the extreme south to the district of Aquia (also Province of Bolognesi).
