The Huántar District is located in the Huari Province in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of 152 km². The 2017 census counted 3589 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 4343, in 2007 it was 3758. The district administration is located in the 3268 m high village of Huántar with 744 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huántar is located 11 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Huari .
Geographical location
The Huántar district is located on the eastern flank of the Cordillera Blanca in the southwest of the Huari province. The Río Mosna flows along the eastern district boundary to the north, its left tributary Río Rurec along the northern district boundary to the east. The main ridge of the Cordillera Blanca with the peaks Nevado Tunsho , Nevado Carhuascancha and Nevado Tijeras Punta runs along the western district boundary .
The district of Huántar borders in the south with the district Chavín de Huántar , in the west with the district Huaraz ( province Huaraz ), in the northwest with the district Independencia (province Huaraz), in the north with the district Huari and in the east with the district San Marcos .
