The Nevado Huantsán , also just called Huantsán , is with a height of 6395 m after the Nevado Huascarán (6768 m) the second highest peak of the Cordillera Blanca in Peru . It is the same height as the Nevado Huandoy . The heavily glaciated mountain is located 24 km east of the city of Huaraz in the Ancash region .

The Huantsán consists of four peaks, the actual Huantsán (6395 m), the Huantsán Oeste (6270 m), the Huantsán Norte (6113 m) and the Huantsán Sur (5913 m).

In terms of mountain technology, the Huantsán is considered a demanding peak. He was only defeated on July 7, 1952 by the French Lionel Terray and the two Dutch Cees Egeler and Tom De Booy.

Like most of the other snow mountains in the Cordillera Blanca, it is part of the Huascarán National Park , in Spanish "Parque Nacional Huascarán".

Touristic

Southwest flank of the Nevado Huantsán

The foot of the Huantsán can be reached from Huaraz in a day trip by mountain bike. Around 6 km south of the city, an unpaved side road branches off the main road in an easterly direction to the village of Macashca ( 9 ° 34 ′  S , 77 ° 30 ′  W ). Minibuses also circulate from Huaraz to the village. From Macashca, a gravel road leads along the Rajucolta Valley (Quebrada Rajucolta) to the lake at the foot of the mountain, the Laguna Rajucolta. At an altitude of approx. 4000 m you reach the border of the national park. You need a visitor ticket, which can be obtained in Huaraz and is valid for several entries.
