The district of Chacas is located in the province of Asunción in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was founded in 1824. It has an area of 451 km². The 2017 census counted 4835 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 5134, in 2007 it was 5334. The district administration is located in the provincial capital of Chacas, at an altitude of 3359 m , with 2067 inhabitants (as of 2017).
Geographical location
The district of Chacas lies on the eastern flank of the Cordillera Blanca and extends over the south of the province of Asunción. The Río Chucpin drains the area to the north. The main ridge of the Cordillera Blanca runs along the western district border with the peaks Nevado Ulta, Nevado Chajiaco, Nevado Yahuina, Nevado Copa Grande, Nevado Bajococha, Nevados Pocotuyo, Nevado Tarushcancha, Nevado Pomabamba and Nevados Jacabamba.
The district of Chacas borders in the southwest with the district Marcará ( province Carhuaz ), in the west with the districts Carhuaz and Shilla (both in the province Carhuaz), in the north with the district Acochaca , in the northeast with the district San Luis ( province Carlos Fermín Fitzcarrald ) and in the southeast to the Huari District ( Huari Province ).
