Chacas founded when San Martin de Chacas , is the administrative center of the eponymous district and provincial capital of Asuncion in the region of Ancash in Peru .

The city is located in the central-eastern Ancash region at an average altitude of 3359 meters. Chacas had 1988 inhabitants in 2017, 10 years earlier it was 2082. The eponymous district, with a population of 4563 inhabitants (as of 2017), is located on the western side of the Río Marañón and extends over 447.69 km², which make up 85% of the province.

history

The population in the region around Chacas probably goes back to the Chavín culture, with influences of the Pashash culture from the north, the Huari , an ethnic group that was later dominated by the Inca culture.

After the arrival of the Spaniards in Peru, missionaries of an Augustinian order founded a Jesuit reduction in 1570 , which developed into an important center of mining by the middle of the 20th century.

Culture

The buildings of the old town in the Andalusian style are still largely preserved.

The most important festivals and holidays in Chacas are Easter, the tourism week in August, the Feast of the Assumption , which is celebrated from August 13th to 22nd, the Don Bosco festival, the festival of San Martin de Porres in the same name District and the feast of Archangel Michael in Chinchurajra.

The ritual dances from the cultural heritage of the indigenous Chacas ancestors are still cultivated.
