The Colcabamba district is located in the Huaraz province in the Ancash region of western Peru . The district was established on October 31, 1941. It has an area of ​​52 km². The 2017 census counted 324 residents. In 1993 the population was 460, in 2007 it was 653. The district administration is located in the 3150  m high village of Colcabamba with 143 inhabitants (as of 2017). Colcabamba is located 31 km west-southwest of the provincial capital Huaraz .

Geographical location

The Colcabamba district is located on the western flank of the Cordillera Negra in the extreme northwest of the Huaraz province. The Río Casma (in the upper reaches of the Río Chacchan and Río Grande) flows westwards along the northern district boundary and drains the area.

The Colcabamba district borders in the southwest with the Pampas Grande district , in the north with the Pariacoto district , in the northeast with the Pira district and in the east with the La Libertad district .
