The Yaután district is located in the Casma province in the Ancash region in central western Peru . It has an area of ​​357.2 km². The 2017 census counted 8,305 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3581, in 2007 it was 3937. The administrative center is the small town of Yaután with 2446 inhabitants located on the left bank of the Río Yaután at an altitude of 809  m (as of 2017).

Geographical location

The district of Yaután is located in the central east of the province of Casma. It extends over the western foothills of the Cordillera Negra , which belongs to the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The river Río Casma (in the upper reaches of the Río Grande ) and its right tributary, the Río Yaután , flow through the district in a westerly direction. Irrigated agriculture is practiced in the two river valleys. Otherwise the landscape consists of desert vegetation. The national road 14A from Casma to Huaraz runs past Yaután .

In the southwest, the district of Yaután is bordered by the district of Casma , in the northwest by the district of Buenavista Alta , in the north by the districts of Quillo and Cascapara (both in the province of Yungay ), in the east by the districts of Cochabamba , Pariacoto and Pampas Grande (all three in the province of Huaraz ).
