The district of Culebras is located in the province of Huarmey in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was established on December 20, 1984. It has an area of 631 km². The 2017 census counted 3,305 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2434, in 2007 it was 3145. The district administration is located in the 5 m high coastal town of La Caleta Culebras with 1552 inhabitants (as of 2017). La Caleta Culebras is located 15 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Huarmey .
Geographical location
The Culebras District is located in the northwest of the Huarmey Province. The district is on the Pacific coast . The foothills of the Peruvian Western Cordillera rise to the east . The Río Culebras crosses the south of the district in a south-westerly direction. The national road 1N ( Panamericana ) crosses the district near the coast.
The district of Culebras borders in the north on the district Casma ( province Casma ), in the northeast on the districts Pampas Grande , Huanchay (both in the province Huaraz ) and Coris ( province Recuay ) and in the south on the district Huarmey .
