Huang Ruo

Huang Ruo (黃 若, * 1976 in Hainan ) is a Chinese-American composer , pianist and singer .

Huang received his first piano and composition lessons from his father at the age of six. At the Shanghai University of Music he got to know classical Chinese music as well as Western music - from Bach, Mozart and Stravinsky to rock 'n' roll, heavy metal and jazz. After winning the Henry Mancini Prize at the International Film and Music Festival in Switzerland in 1995, he went to the USA, where he continued his education at the Oberlin Conservatory and the Juilliard School . His composition teachers there were Randolph Coleman and Samuel Adler . Huang teaches composition at the Mannes College of Music and is the artistic director of the ensemble FIRE (Future In Reverse).

In his compositions, Huang combines classical Chinese music with Western avant-garde music, rock and jazz. His musical work ranges from orchestral pieces, chamber music, operas, drama music, works for modern dance to sound installations, multimedia works, experimental improvisation, folk rock and film music. Ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic Orchestra , the Philadelphia Orchestra , the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra , the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center , the Asko Ensemble , the Nieuw Ensemble , Quatuor Diotima and the Dutch Vocal Laboratory and conductors such as Wolfgang Sawallisch , Marin Alsop , Michael Tilson Thomas , James Conlon , Dennis Russell Davies , Ed Spanjaard , Xian Zhang and Ilan Volkov premiered and performed his compositions.

Huang worked with the dancer Damian Woetzel and the choreographer Christopher Wheeldon of the New York City Ballet and with the painter Norman Perryman . In 2003 he conducted four chamber concerts as part of the Miller Theater composer's portrait series, one recording was released in 2007 on the Naxos label . His work Leaving Sao for symphony orchestra and voice was released with Albany Records in 2008 with himself as singer . At the Santa Fe Opera in 2014 his opera Dr. Sun Yat-Se the American premiere. The following year the world premiere of Paradise Interrupted took place at the Spoleto Festival . The world premiere of An American Soldier at the Opera Theater of St. Louis followed in 2018 . The premiere of M. Butterfly was planned at the Santa Fe Opera 2020, as was the world premiere of Book of the Mountains and Seas , (with the puppeteer Basil Twist ) at the Hong Kong New Vision Festival .
