Michael Tilson Thomas
Michael Tilson Thomas (also known as MTT ; born December 21, 1944 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American conductor , pianist and composer . He has been chief conductor of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra since 1995 .
Life
Tilson Thomas studied piano with John Crown , composition and conducting with Ingolf Dahl at the University of Southern California . As a young pianist, he played in Los Angeles a. a. with Gregor Piatigorsky and Jascha Heifetz . Under the supervision of Igor Stravinsky, he took part in the world premiere of the four-hand version for piano of the Sacre du printemps . In 1966 he was assistant conductor in Bayreuth and in 1969 won the Koussevitzky Prize in Tanglewood . In 1973 he became chief conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted regularly with the Boston Symphony Orchestra , the London Symphony Orchestra (1988–1995 chief conductor, currently principal guest conductor) and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra . In 1990 he performed his composition From Anne Frank's Diary . Other compositions by him include a. Showa / Shoah , Urban Legend , Island Music , Notturno , Street Song , Agnegram . Tilson Thomas is an openly gay community in San Francisco.
