On February 8, 2006, the most important American music award was presented for the 48th time at the Grammy Awards 2006 in the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The big winners of the night were U2 with five awards and Kelly Clarkson , who won two Grammys but beat Mariah Carey , who was the favorite with eight Grammys, in the all-important "Best Pop Singer" category. Mariah Carey was able to take home three Grammys in the R&B area . Other three Grammy winners were Kanye West and newcomer John Legend . The group Cream , which reunited in 2005 for a concert at the Royal Albert Hall , received the Grammy for Lifetime Achievement. The German bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff received his third trophy in the classical category with this year's Grammy.

The show was opened by a joint appearance by Madonna , De La Soul and the Gorillaz , which were represented by means of a CGI animation . Other musical highlights included performances by Coldplay , Bruce Springsteen , Mariah Carey , Kelly Clarkson , Sly Stone and Paul McCartney .
