Steve Lillywhite
Steven 'Steve' Lillywhite , CBE (* 1955 in Egham , England ) is a British music producer .
Life
Lillywhite grew up with two siblings in a musical family in Egham, Surrey . As a child he learned the piano, guitar and bass and played in the school band. His younger brother Adrian was a member of the British punk band The Members, for which Lillywhite later produced.
He began his career in 1972 as a tape operator for Polygram in their studios on Stanhope Place in London. After working as a sound engineer for the Dutch band Golden Earring and the British band Nucleus , he produced demo recordings in 1976 for the then unknown band Ultravox , which led to Ultravox being awarded a record deal with Island Records . Lillywhite co-produced Ultravox's debut album with Brian Eno and was soon hired as a producer by Island Artists, for whom he produced many bands in the 1980s. He had his first single hit with the production of Hong Kong Gardens for Siouxsie and the Banshees in 1978. Lillywhite has been a freelance music producer since then. His production for The Members brought him in contact with Virgin Records , to which XTC were also under contract, for which he produced the albums White Music (1978), Drums & Wires (1979) and Black Sea (1980). For Peter Gabriel he produced his third solo album ( III or Melt , 1980) with Hugh Padgham as sound engineer, which was formative for the 1980s with his drum sound.
In 1980 Lillywhite produced Boy, the debut album of the then unknown Irish band U2 , for which he also produced the follow-up albums October (1981) and War (1983). In 1982 the label Chrysalis Records let the lavishly produced debut LP by the British band King Trigger disappear into oblivion. He consolidated his sound with productions for The Psychedelic Furs ( The Psychedelic Furs , 1980 and Talk, Talk, Talk , 1981), Big Country ( The Crossing , 1983 and Steeltown , 1984) and the Simple Minds ( Sparkle in the Rain , 1984) and built a reputation as a record producer for new wave bands. When the Rolling Stones signed a new record deal with CBS in 1985 , they had Lillywhite produce the album ' Dirty Work '.
After the 1980s, Lillywhite produced the multi-platinum albums Under the Table and Dreaming , Crash and Before These Crowded Streets by the Dave Matthews Band . He continued to produce Morrissey and co-produced songs from U2's Achtung Baby , All That You Can't Leave Behind , How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb , No Line on the Horizon, and Songs of Experience .
Lillywhite was married to songwriter and singer Kirsty MacColl , who died in 2000, from 1984 to 1994 , with whom he has two children.
