biography

The Psychedelic Furs live in 2007

The Psychedelic Furs were founded in 1977 under the name RKO. They first changed their name to radio, then played several concerts under the name The Europeans, but at the same time they called themselves The Psychedelic Furs. The band at that time consisted of Richard Butler (vocals), his brother Tim Butler (bass), Duncan Kilburn (saxophone), Paul Wilson (drums) and Roger Morris (guitar). 1979 Wilson left the group and was replaced by Vince Ely. With John Ashton came a second guitarist in the band.

The Psychedelic Furs mixed punk and psychedelic rock , which was unusual for the time. The mix sounded more poppy than most punk bands at the time. Strong David Bowie influences can be seen on her self-titled debut album (1980) . In the UK , they debuted in the top 20 of the charts. A US press was released at the same time, but did not achieve the commercial success it had been longing for.

In 1981 they released their second album Talk Talk Talk . Not very successful in America, they even released two singles in the UK : "Dumb Waiters" and "Pretty In Pink". The latter song served as the inspiration for the film of the same name by director John Hughes .

In 1982 Morris and Kilburn got out. The remaining members moved to New York State , where they recorded the album Forever Now with producer Todd Rundgren . Vince Ely has now also left the cast. With Keith Forsey (drums) a new member was found.

In 1984 the Furs released the album Mirror Moves . With the single Heaven they came in the British Top 40. In 1986 they recorded a newly revised version of their song Pretty In Pink for the soundtrack of the film of the same name . It became her first hit in both England (# 18) and America (# 41).

With Midnight to Midnight they quickly added an album to benefit from the success. With "Heartbreak Beat" they were able to crack the top 40 of the single charts in America for the first time. In 1989 they released the album Book Of Days , which again went more in the harder direction. For this album, Vince Ely also returned to the band. In 1991 the album World Outside was released.

In 1991 the band broke up and the Butler brothers formed Love Spit Love .

Reunion

2000 there was a reunion of the band in the occupation of Richard Butler (vocals), Tim Butler (bass), John Ashton (guitar) and Love Spit Love drummer Frank Ferrer. The Furs toured several times, but have not yet released a new album.

In 2020 The Psychedelic Furs returned with a new album after 29 years. Made of Rain was announced by the single You'll Be Mine and was released on July 31, 2020.
