Thirty Seconds to Mars (often 30 Seconds to Mars wrote with 30STM for short) is one of Los Angeles coming alternative rock - band , which by actor Jared Leto and his brother Shannon Leto was founded.

history

The brothers Jared (vocals, guitar) and Shannon Leto (drums) played music together as young people. With changing band names they appeared in small clubs until they were finally signed in 1998 by Immortal Records ( Virgin Records ) as 30 Seconds to Mars by Beni Frei from Zurich. According to Jared Leto, the band name is taken from a chapter heading from the thesis paper of a former Harvard professor. In it the author dealt with the exponential technical growth and its relation to humanity, according to which we are - theoretically speaking - only thirty seconds away from Mars.

In August 2002 they released the self-titled debut album , produced by Bob Ezrin and Brian Virtue . In the USA alone, the album sold over 100,000 times in the following three years.

For the subsequent tour in 2002/2003, on which they opened for well-known bands such as The Used , Puddle of Mudd and Incubus , they were joined by bassist Matthew Wachter and the two guitarists Solon Bixler and Kevin Drake. The latter left the band after a short time, and guitarist and keyboardist Tomislav Miličević took their place .

2005-2008: A Beautiful Lie

On August 30, 2005, the second album A Beautiful Lie was released . The producer this time was Josh Abraham , who had already produced the Velvet Revolver album, which won the Grammy Award . Some of the lyrics for the album had already been written on the tour of the debut album and on the set for Alexander . Was recorded A Beautiful Lie finally on four continents in five different countries, along with the USA, among others Morocco, Thailand and South Africa. From a selection of forty songs, only 10 made it onto the album, plus two bonus tracks that were added after the album was circulating on the Internet a few months before its official release date (including a cover of Björk's song Hunter ). The album has elements of a concept album with a chapter structure. After five months, A Beautiful Lie trumped the debut album, on January 12, 2006 over 100,000 copies had gone over the counter. By January 2008, over 1,000,000 CDs had been sold worldwide.

In 2005, the band was on an uninterrupted promotion tour for A Beautiful Lie for almost eight months and opened shows for bands such as Audioslave , Seether and My Chemical Romance . From the beginning of March to June 1, 2006 they were in the USA on their first official and - with numerous completely sold out concerts - very successful own tour called Forever Night - Never Day . In the end, the band received a Chainsaw Award. On November 1, 2007, the group received the "Rock Out Award" at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Munich. In 2008 the group won the Kerrang Awards. They were the only act to receive two awards for Best International Band and Best Single (for From Yesterday) this year. The band was personally in England to receive the coveted trophies and to thank their fans directly in the acceptance speech.

On October 14, 2008, they received the coveted award "Best International Band" at the MTV Awards of Latin America in Mexico. On November 6, 2008, two more awards followed at the European Music Awards in the categories "Best Rock Band" and "Best Video". At the European Music Awards 2010 in Madrid, the band won the award for "Best Rock".

2009-2011: This Is War

On October 6, 2009 was the radio premiere for the single Kings and Queens . The album This Is War was released in Germany on December 4th, 2009. This Is War, the title of the new album, is much more than just a tribute to the inner struggles that the band fought in the course of the album production. It pays homage to the global economic and climate-related crises and pays homage to the infamous $ 30 million legal battle with Virgin Records. This Is War is the result of 18 months of creative work that the band has led with vigor, but in the private seclusion of a studio they set up in a house in the Hollywood Hills. "Instruments" of the most curious kind are used on the album, falcon cries, the singing of Tibetan monks, but above all the edited sound of 100,000 euphoric fans. The second single was This Is War , but the official video wasn't released until February 2011. In mid-2010, the third single, Closer to the Edge, was released .

The previously written single Hurricane 2.0 with Kanye West was not on the normal album version due to discrepancies with the record company, but only on the deluxe edition released in 2010. The song was released as the fourth release in September 2010.

In July 2011 they were nominated three times for the MTV Video Music Awards . The video for Hurricane was nominated for Best Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Direction . MTV Unplugged: Thirty Seconds to Mars was released on August 19th, featuring unplugged recordings of Hurricane , Night of the Hunter , Kings and Queens and Where the Streets Have No Name , a song by the band U2 . In the following days, the album was the best-selling music album on the German iTunes charts. On August 24th, it even rose to number 1 in the overall album charts on iTunes. On September 20, they were nominated for the MTV Europe Music Award in the categories Best World Stage , Best Alternative and Biggest Fans , all of which they were able to win except for the latter.

As the band with the most shows on a single album, Thirty Seconds to Mars made the Guinness Book of Records . On December 7th they gave their 300th concert for This Is War in New York . A concert film was also released for the performance under the name Mars 300.

Since the end of 2011, they have also been campaigning for the earthquake victims in Haiti by shooting several videos there and donating the proceeds of their merchandising products to the affected areas.

2012–2016: Love Lust Faith + Dreams

Jared Leto revealed to Rolling Stone magazine in April 2012 that they were working on a new studio album. He also commented on the collaboration with Kanye West on the song Hurricane and stated that he was interested in further collaborations for the new album. In November 2012, Jared Leto indicated in an interview that the album could come out before it appeared at the Download Festival in June.

On February 28, 2013, the band announced on Twitter that the name of the first single was Up in the Air . A copy of the song was sent to NASA and SpaceX to be sent into space - to match the song title. On March 1st, it was launched into space by a Falcon 9 rocket, making Up in the Air the first commercial song ever to be launched into space. Three days later it was already possible for the crew members of the ISS-Expedition 35 to be the first outsiders to hear the single. On March 18, the song was first presented to the public on NASA TV and on March 19 it was released for download.

On the day of the single's world premiere, the band announced that their fourth studio album, Love Lust Faith + Dreams , would be out on May 21st. In addition, the cover of the long player, which was designed by the artist Damien Hirst , and the track list were published. In Germany the album was released on May 17th.

In the US, City of Angels was released as a digital promo single on July 30th , and the second international single, Do or Die , is slated for release on September 9th, for which the band released a video on August 5th. The short film for City of Angels , which was shot in August, was first shown on October 12 at one of their concerts. In the film, various people - including famous personalities such as Kanye West , Lindsay Lohan or James Franco , but also ordinary citizens and the band members themselves - tell what they associate with Los Angeles .

At the MTV Video Music Awards 2013 , her short film for Up in the Air was named Best Rock Video.

After the album was released, they started their world tour, performing at festivals such as Rock in Rio , Rock am Ring and the iTunes Festival . In March 2014, Jared Leto announced together with Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda at a press conference the 25 concerts in the USA comprehensive Carnivores tour with Linkin Park as co-headliner and AFI .

2017: A Day in the Life of America

On August 22nd, 2017 the single Walk on Water was released, which will be part of a new album. The title is not only part of a new album, but also part of the documentary A Day in the Life of America , which is accompanied by the band's new album.

2018: AMERICA and Monolith Tour

The album AMERICA , released on April 6, 2018, was followed by the world tour called Monolith Tour . The tour started on March 12, 2018, even before the album was released. After the first joint concerts, Tomo left the tour for personal reasons. In June 2018 Tomo officially announced on his Twitter account that he was leaving the band and explained and apologized to the fans in the form of a letter. Jared and Shannon continued the tour alone.

Effect and style

The triad

In terms of external impact, front man Jared Leto makes sure that the band is respected not because of his film career, but because of the musical quality. In spite of this, performances have already been canceled in the past because the concert was advertised with his name.

Thirty Seconds to Mars make use of a band's own iconography or symbolism. Different graphics are used by them and the band has often mentioned in interviews that Thirty Seconds to Mars in its entirety is an "art project". The meaning of most of the symbols and graphics is unclear, and the band has never confirmed interpretations. The motto of the band is the Latin proverb provehito in altum , which can be translated either as " Jump forward into the depths (into the unknown)" or as "March on to higher levels".

There is close contact between the band and the fan community known as Echelon in an internal Internet forum ( Acropolis ) and via Twitter . The name of the fan base comes from the song of the same name on their debut album. Singer Jared Leto said of Echelon :

Some people ask us if this is a cult. I say this: It's something special. It's not for everyone - it's only for those who understand.

Some people ask us if it's a cult. I say this: it is special. It is not for everyone - only for those who understand. "

- Jared Leto

With their single A Beautiful Lie , Thirty Seconds to Mars try to draw attention to climate change. They are supported by Buzznet and the Natural Resources Defense Council .
