The MTV Europe Music Awards 2001 were presented on November 8, 2001 in the Festhalle , Frankfurt am Main , Germany. The moderator was Sacha Baron Cohen , who appeared as his fictional character "Ali G". It was the 8th presentation of the award and the second in Germany.
As in previous years, the regional nominations were expanded. In addition to the regional nominations for Germany, France, Denmark, Italy, the Nordic countries, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom and Ireland, there was also a category for artists from Russia . For the first time, an award for the best website, the Web Award, was presented.
The winner of the evening was Limp Bizkit with three EMAs. The British pop band Gorillaz led the nominations . The award was overshadowed by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and had to take place under increased security precautions. Jennifer Lopez and Destiny's Child canceled their participation in advance due to safety concerns.
Alicia Keys had to cancel her announced participation because of a vocal cord inflammation.
